KNIT INN 2010 CLASS INFORMATION

Each knitter should bring the BASICS to class.  This includes: pen, paper, scissors, sew up needles, tape measures, markers, stitch holders, and anything else used in your daily knitting.  Be sure and check each class listing for other materials needed , materials fee (paid to the teacher) and /or homework.  Homework must be completed ahead of time.  Do not expect teacher to give you time in class to do homework.


TIPS, TECHNIQUES AND TREASURES


How do you add on a new skein of yarn, anyway? Make 1 always leaves a hole - let's do away with that. Droopy ends on knit rows - we will tighten them up.  How do you do k1 front and back without leaving a bump: Circular shawl with no hole in center.  Picking up dropped stitches and lots, lots more.  No worries, only happy knitting.

Skill Level: Beginner
Supplies: Solid color worsted weight yarn and appropriate
                needles.
Homework: Work a stockinette swatch approx. 4" by 4"

30 MINUTE HATS - LOOMING 101


Learn to make a hat in only 30 minutes. Great for baby gifts, Christmas gifts and charity knitting.  New tricks and techniques make looming much quicker and easier than the directions that come with looms.  You will learn how to do hems, decreases, change colors, add beads and many other techniques to create original hats quickly and easily.


Skill Level: Beginner
Supplies: Round plastic loom.  Blue knifty loom is the smallest size and
                will make an infant hat.  Red (or second size) will make a child’s
                Hat. Your kit will include enough yarn and beads to make several
                children’s hats.
                         
Homework: None
Fee: $5 to be paid to instructor.  Please have correct change.



KNITTED EDGINGS


Ready to try something new? How about adding trims and/or edgings to your knitted items to make them truly one of a kind? Express yourself!  You will receive patterns and begin to knit the trim of your choice.

Skill Level: Intermediate
Supplies: Yarn and appropriate size needles.  Same weight
                yarn as swatches or appropriate yarn for
                 trimming garment.
Homework: 3 - 4 knitted squares, 3" X 3", or an item you
                   would like to add a trim to.
Fee: None



KNIT ONE BELOW


Learn a fun new way to put color in your knitting. Great for using variegated yarns to produce a vertical pattern with no pooling.  We will practice the technique and make a dishcloth at the same time.

Skill Level: Beginner
Supplies: Two colors of cotton yarn such as Peaches and
               Cream and appropriate sized needles.
Homework: None
Fee: None



BUTTONS OR WHAT


The class will cover polymer clay medium with hands on learning some of the newer techniques. The class will also cover some ideas which might be new to close a sweater such as beads and knitted options.

Skill Level: Beginner
Supplies: Dull paring knife, something to roll out clay with       
                (piece of 1" dowel or pvc or rolling pin), an
                 aluminum knitting needle, stamp or anything
                to press a design into clay.
Homework: None
Fee: $5 to be paid to teacher.  Please have correct change



BLOCKING


In this class you will learn various techniques for blocking finished garments.

FINGERLESS GLOVES WITH VARIATIONS


You will be learning how to knit several different styles of fingerless gloves with cabling and other stitch patterns. We will learn how to knit in the round on dpns, cable cast on, increases and simple cables.  We will also practice thumb gussets.

Skill Level: Advanced beginner (comfortable with knitting, purling, casting
                    on, etc.
Supplies: 100 g of yarn suitable for gloves (soft and smooth fingering or
                sport weight. Set of double points - size 2 or 4 depending on yarn.
                Cable needle and scrap of yarn same weight you are using.
Homework: Have two swatches of 24 sts and 1" knit in stockinette on
                    holders or needles to practice thumb gussets.
Fee: None



TOE UP SOCKS - Part 1&2 : toe up socks with the Magic Loop method

 We will be doing toe-up socks with the magic loop method.  You will be learning Judy's magic cast on, Make 1 (M1) increase, short row heel, EZ sewn bind off.
 Skill level: Basic understanding of magic loop, know how to knit and purl.
 Supplies Needed: Basics, yarn for socks - sport weight or larger.  32 or 40" circular needle size appropriate for yarn.  (Cable must be flexible, Boye will not work for this, Addi, Inox or Knitpicks will work).  Stitch markers.
 Materials Fee: None
 Homework: Recommended if you have a chance check out Youtube.com videos of " Judy’s magic cast on" there are two by Cat Bordhi.



SOCKS FROM THE TOP (socks for beginners) - part 1 &2


Start at the top of the sock on Friday and knit the cuff before class 2.  You will then learn how to turn the heel.  There will be samples of socks in different stages so you can learn how a sock is constructed.  Kitchner stitch will also be covered. A basic sock pattern will be provided.

Skill Level: Advanced beginner (must be comfortable knitting on double
                   Double points.
Supplies: Set of size 2 double pointed needles and 100 grams of fingering
                yarn.
Homework: None
Fees: None



A BUNNY BY ANY OTHER COLOR

A fun project for knitters of all skill levels. The project is a great gift for little girls and boys.  Perfect for Easter baskets.  You will make a bunny with paws and ears and a head stuffed with leftover yarns.  Any colors are fun.  Make a multi colored bunny, a blue one a green one.  Pattern will be supplied.

Skill Level: Beginner
Supplies: Two skeins of yarn suitable for use by a baby.  Heaven, which is a
                plush nylon yarn by Plymouth is great for an infant.  Two  sizes
                of needles appropriate for yarn.  For Heaven a 10.5 & 8.  If you
                are a loose knitter than a 9 & 7.
Homework: None

TWO HANDED, TWO COLOR KNITTING


You will learn how to knit stranded (fairisle style) knitting using two colors of yarn and both hands by making a snowflake motif headband.

Skill Level: Advanced beginner.  Should be comfortable knitting in the
                    round with circular needles.
Supplies: Size 4 16" circular needle (must be 16" or smaller).  2 oz sport
               sport wt yarn in main color (MC), 1 oz contrasting for snow-
               flake.
Homework: Cast on 110 sts in MC.  Join.  Knit 8 rounds.  Work turning
                    Round as follows: *yo, k2tog, repeat from * to end of rnd.
Fee: None



CABLING WITHOUT FEAR OR A NEEDLE

Learn how to read your cables so you know which way they cross without having to read line by line instructions.  Learn how to cable without a needle for many cables.  We will start with the beginning band of a hat.  It can be finished as a head band or a hat so choose yarn that you would like for a finished hat.

Skill Level: Intermediate - no cable experience necessary
Supplies: 2 partial skeins of WW yarn for swatches.  One 220 yard skein
               of  ww yarn for third swatch/hat. A light colored yarn will show
               up cable best.  Lion Brand Wool, Cascade 220, Knit Picks Wool
                         of Andes will all work as will Encore and Woolease.  Size 8 & 9
                         needles.
           Homework:
           Swatch 1: With size 8 and partial skein cast on 14 sts. Row 1: (RS) *P2, K4
           Rep from * end P2.  Row 2: (WS) Knit the knit sts and purl the purls.
           Put on holder leaving yarn attached.

           Swatch 2: With size 8 and another partial skein cast on 18 sts.  Row1: (RS)
           *P2, K6, repeat from * end P2. Row 2: Knit the knits and purl the purls. Put
           on holder leaving yarn attached.

            Swatch 3: With size 9 needles and your 220 yard skein cast on 38 sts.
            Set up Row – (WS): K2, place marker, *k4, p6.  Repeat from * 3 times
            Total.  K4, place marker, K2.

MITERED SQUARES

Let's get started on a scarf.  Learn the "building blocks" to make everything from scarves to vests and lots of other things.

Skill Level: Beginner
Supplies: 300 yds of WW yarn to make a scarf.  At least two colors.  Size 7 or 8 needles.
Homework: None
Fee: None



INCREASES AND DECREASES I (THE BEGINNING)

Increases covered will be yarn over, knit/purl in same stitch, and pick up in row below.  Decreases covered will be k2tog, p2 tog, sspo, ssk.  Learn how to do them and when you use each.

Skill Level: Beginner
Supplies: Smooth ww yarn and size 7 & 8 needles
Homework: cast on 30 sts.  Knit 4 rows of garter (all knit) then work 6 rows of stockinette (knit 1 row, purl 1 row) ending having done a wrong side purl row.
Fee: None



FUN MODULAR SCARF

Do you love all of the self striping and hand dyed sock yarns on the market but don't wear or knit socks.  This fun challenging scarf is a great way to show off some of the pretty sock yarns.

Skill Level: Intermediate/Experienced - please no beginner knitters
Supplies: 100 grams of patterned sock yarn, size 6 needles
Homework: None
Fee: None



INTRODUCTION TO USING DOUBLE POINTS

Have you watched someone knitting with double-pointed needles and  wished you could do it? It's easier than it looks.  Come learn to handle all of those sticks without losing your mind or your patience.  Knowledge of basic knitting techniques (knit, purl, casting on, binding off) is essential.

You will learn when and how dpns can be used (picking up sts in tight spots, Icord, etc) Also, how to choose dpns.

Skill Level: Adv. Beginner
Supplies: ww yarn, set of  size 7 or 8 double pointed needles
Homework: Knit a 4 X 4 " swatch with ww yarn and size 7 or 8 needle
Fee: None



LACE MADE EASY

You will learn the basics of lace knitting, applications for use, along with helpful tips such as correcting mistakes, to make lace knitting easier than you think.  We will be knitting either a flower or bookmark.

Skill Level: None
Supplies: Size 2,3, or 4 needles.  Yarn will be provided
Homework: None
Fee: None



DIVING INTO LACE

Don't worry, we're diving – err, jumping feet-first into the shallow end.  In this beginning lace class you'll learn how to knit a pretty little Lacy Baby Hat.  You should get partway through with it during class, and you will leave with instructions to continue exactly what you’ve been knitting in class until it is 4" tall, and then decrease for the crown, finish off, and weave in the ends.

The pattern is Old Shale, also knows as Feather and Fan, which forms little waves and lacy scallops.  You will learn to knit in the round - choose between double pointed needles, or a long circular needle and the Magic Loop.  We will talk about ways to read lace patterns and ways to shape the crown of the hat.

Skill Level: Advanced Beginner
Supplies: Skein of soft, smooth, ww yarn in a sold color and the size needles needed to give you a gauge of 4.5 sts per inch.  Needles can be either a set of dpns or a 40" long circular needle for magic loop.  You will be knitting in the round so straight needles will not work.
Homework: Do a swatch until you get a gauge of 4.5 sts/inch with your yarn
Fee: None



ICORD (THE WHOLE NINE YARDS)

Learn everything there is to know about Icord – how to make it and how to use it.  Applied Icord, Icord bind offs, Icord hat toppers, I cord button loops, etc, etc.

Skill Level: Beginner
Supplies: Two colors of smooth ww yarn and size 7 or 8 double pointed needles.
Homework: None
Fee: None



INCREASES AND DECREASES II (THE NEXT LEVEL)


We will cover multiple increases in the same st, in between sts, and review pick up st in row below.  We will do double decreases and multiple st decreases.

Skill Level: Must know how to knit, purl, cast on, work basic dec or have taken Inc, Dec I.
Supplies: Smooth ww yarn and size 7 or 8 needle
Homework: cast on 30 sts.  Knit 4 rows of garter (all knit) then work 6 rows of stockinette (knit1 row, purl 1 row) ending having done a wrong side row.
Fee: None.



SEWING UP


Learn basic sewing techniques for your knits.  Mattress stitch, 3 needle bind-off, backstitch, and crocheting together all covered.  Handout provided.

Skill Level: Beginner
Supplies: Homework, needles and yarn used in homework, yarn sewing needle
                and crochet hook.
Homework: Knit 4 stockinette squares at least 4" by 4" and bind off all from same
                    yarn to be sewn together. Knit 2 squares and leave stitches on holder.
Fee: None



HOW TO MAKE A COPPER SHAWL PIN


Do you enjoy knitting shawls and scarves but don't want to pay the HIGH price for shawl pins??  This is the class for you.  After this class you will be able to make copper shawl pins for almost nothing.

This class will be a hands on demonstration for making copper shawl pins. The class will include copper wire, design suggestions and complete directions so you can make your own.

Skill Level: None
Supplies: Needle nose pliers
Homework: Don't forget your needle nose pliers
Fee: $5 payable to instructor. Please have correct change.  You will be given a kit with
          Enough 14 gauge copper wire to make two shawl pins.



DESIGN YOUR OWN STOLE

Learn about multiple methods to design and knit shawls.

Skill Level: Advanced Beg.  Should be familiar with basics of knitting including dec
                    and inc.
Supplies: Smooth yarns sport or ww and appropriate sized needles.
Homework: None
Fee: None



BROOMSTICK LACE


Broomstick Lace is quick and versatile.  Because of the large size of the needle you can quickly make a scarf, baby afghan, or a full-sized afghan in a matter of days.  It is versatile because you can make the item vertically or horizontally.  And, many types of yarn can be used so you can different looks with different yarns.

Skill Level: Beginner
Supplies: Everyone will be provided with a set of needles, crochet hook and yarn.
Homework: None
Fee: None - all supplies including needles have been donated.
